Why did Germany lose so many soldiers when it took over France in 1940?

It can be very difficult to invade and conquer a country, especially the largest of the western European ones. The loss of German life isn't brought up in class because the government doesn't want children to feel any remorse for our enemies, past or present (i am NOT saying that I was in favor of Germany in WW2).
