American pet owners,what are you doing to prevent your pets from becoming over weight or obese?

I was reading the newspaper and in it ,it said that the PHS & SPCA in California are presently taking care of an obese Cat that was surrendered by by an American that weighs 30(The cat originally weighed 31.14 pounds) pounds and is currently on a low fat/high fiber diet.
