How to get black scuff marks of your car?

I was backing out of my friends house and a rickty old gate swiped my car. Its got a little scratch but alot of black scuffing. I want to get it off but I don't want to go out and buy WD40. Does anyone have any home appliance or tricks of that nature that will get it off?
