What to do if a gerbil's ear starts to bleed?

My gerbil is about 31/2 years old and his ear started bleeding, i haven't really seen him scratch anywhere so i thought it was allergies so i changed the bedding but its been 2 days and it started again and now he's scratching it.Does anyone know what could cause this or what i should do about it..
