Can screen protectors get scratches too?

i just got an iphone yesterday and got a protector put on the screen and I noticed some scratches on it today, so could the scratches be on the protector? they're very minor, but can scratches cut through the protector and scratch the screen beneath it, or am i just overthinking? i remember there weren't any on the phone before the protector. ah sorry i am such a perfectionist, especially when i just buy new expensive stuff :o
